National Rail Safety Week

September 19-25 marks National Rail Safety Week across America. In 2021 in Illinois, 101 vehicle crashes were reported at public highway-rail grade crossings, resulting in 24 fatalities and 25 injuries. This year, Operation Lifesaver is marking 50 years of promoting rail safety to stop track tragedies. A few rail safety tips include:

•          Always expect a train at each highway-rail intersection at any time.

•          Never walk on tracks. It is considered illegal trespassing and is highly dangerous.

•          Cross train tracks ONLY at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings.
